Summary

This grant is offered for arts‑based multicultural nonprofits located in North Carolina. It supports both project work and organizational operating expenses. The idea is to increase access to quality arts experiences for all citizens by helping organizations whose programming emphasizes diverse cultural perspectives and serves underrepresented groups.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit arts organizations (those with 501(c)(3) status are preferred, though nonprofits in spirit without that exact IRS status may also apply) that have been running for at least one year (for project grants) or for multiple years (for full operating support). Projects must connect with multicultural communities—examples include African American, Latino/a/x, Asian American, Native American, Arab American, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander—and should involve collaborating with or centering artists or community participants with those cultural roots or lived experiences.

Grant amounts begin at $500 for project support; the maximum depends on the budget for the current year. Applicants are required to provide a cash match of 1:1. In other words, for every dollar requested, the organization must contribute an equal amount in cash. There are requirements around submitting financial reports (past fiscal year), current operating budgets, and proposed project budgets. Proposals are reviewed based on planning capability, financial stability, alignment with mission, access and equity of programming, and impact on the community.

The review is competitive; applications are assessed on a point scale. Priority is given first to organizations in need of operating support (if they’re arts nonprofits), then to projects in arts education, cultural exchange, or civic programming that bring together different communities. In short, this grant is meant to help local arts nonprofits strengthen inclusive, multicultural arts work.
