Grant Overview

Reducing Coastal Erosion in North Carolina

North Carolina's coastal communities are uniquely vulnerable to erosion, exacerbated by climate change and increasing severe weather events. According to the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management, the state is losing approximately 5.2 feet of shoreline per year on average, with some areas experiencing much greater losses. This situation poses considerable challenges for local ecosystems, properties, and coastal infrastructure, creating urgency for innovative solutions to combat erosion.

Local stakeholders facing these challenges include coastal residents, environmental researchers, and local governments. Communities along the coast vary significantly in resources, with many low-income coastal areas especially at risk, as they may lack the capacity to implement effective erosion control measures. Furthermore, environmental researchers often seek partnerships with community organizations to collectively develop and test sustainable practices, presenting an opportunity for collaboration through funding initiatives.

This funding initiative is designed to support community-led strategies aimed at addressing coastal erosion. Eligible applicants will include local governments, NGOs, and community organizations that can demonstrate a collaborative approach to developing and implementing erosion control strategies. Requirements for funding may include presenting data on local erosion trends, effective community engagement methods, and a clear plan for monitoring and evaluation.

Through this funding, the initiative will focus on implementing effective, sustainable erosion management practices, leveraging local knowledge and research-based solutions. By supporting projects that restore natural coastal buffers, such as wetlands and dunes, the initiative aims to enhance the resilience of coastal ecosystems and protect vulnerable communities from further erosion. These restorative practices are essential for maintaining not only the physical integrity of coastal areas but also the ecological health of the region, which contributes to biodiversity and tourism opportunities.

The collaborative efforts funded by this initiative will empower local communities to take proactive measures to combat coastal erosion, facilitating knowledge transfer and capacity building. Ultimately, the program will help build a sustainable framework that enhances the resilience of North Carolina’s coastal landscapes and communities amid ongoing environmental changes.
